Hi-ho readers,
The subject line this issue is from a text I sent to Alex when we found out we, both Brooklyn-dwellers, were at Zabar’s within 20 minutes of each other. I did buy a knish but also a lot of expensive cheese and an entire babka.
Since we last spoke, I came across my new favorite place for takeout, which is Park Slope’s Kulushkat. If you are in its delivery radius, the Eggplant A La Yafa is garlicky, tender bliss. I went to the Central Park Zoo, and saw some very goofy snow monkeys and several types of penguins, among other things. Besides the penguins, which are basically in jail, the security on the enclosures seems…low. I wasn’t worried while there but I did think about it for a while when I got home. I went apple picking with Jehan (her first time!) and ate Fujis for days, perhaps the best variety for handfruit?
I went to the Met with my mom, for probably the first time in 20 years for either of us. We were there for nearly five hours and didn’t even finish the ground floor. It’s truly a delight and I think will end up being a refuge over the next coming months/a carrot-on-a-stick to get myself out of the house. Anyway, I’ve really got to get back to the Temple of Dendur during When Harry Met Sally Weather. Yesterday I collected four perfect clamshells at the beach in Connecticut. I will probably find some more today, and eat mushroom pizza on the old roller coaster platform with a hazy view of One World Trade.
Media Diet
- Inside the Bitter Divorce of Cellino & Barnes (Jeremy Kutner / New York Magazine), on the pair’s big breakup. Weirdly, this was published very shortly before Barnes’ recent death in a small-aircraft crash.

- Wigan Kebab. Smack barm pey wet? (Does it sound like I’m having a stroke? No, it’s just British.)
- Enya Is Everywhere (Jenn Pelly / Pitchfork)
- The Two-Headed Calf, by Laura Gilpin (at the end of the newsletter)

Last year I became mildly notorious among my friends for not only researching and collating information the ballot proposals in NYC but also the candidates for judicial positions in Kings County. There is almost no information for the layman that’s made super public, and I will try to email that out (maybe as a special edition?) soon, so early voters (like me) can feel better informed.
Congratulations, sailor. You made it to Friday.
See you soon,
Emily
