SUMMARY:The Image
DESCRIPTION:Experience an evening of powerful\, thought-provoking music with the world premiere of Stephen Main’s The Image and Jessie Montgomery’s Divided. Composed for solo cello and orchestra\, Divided captures the emotional turmoil of a world grappling with racial injustice\, poverty\, and climate change. With the cello as a passionate\, unrelenting voice against the orchestra’s gritty backdrop\, the piece explores the struggle to find beauty and agency amid chaos. Stephen Main’s The Image expands on this theme of individual dignity\, drawing on the concept of Imago Dei — the belief in the divine spark within each person and the sacred freedom of conscience it entails. With a vivid libretto and sweeping choral and orchestral writing\, The Image reflects on humanity’s struggle for liberty and justice across history\, warning of the fragility of these ideals in the face of rising authoritarianism. Together\, these works explore the tension between chaos and hope\, challenging us to confront issues of our time while celebrating the enduring strength of the human spirit.
