SUMMARY:Divine Muse: St. Cecilia Mass
DESCRIPTION:The second installment of the Divine Muse series features Charles Gounod’s deeply moving but infrequently performed St. Cecilia Mass. Trinity’s adaptation replaces the rare string octobass (there’s only one performing instrument in the world!) with the lowest pipes of the magnificent new organ in the church’s nave. This uplifting celebration of St. Cecilia\, the patron saint of music\, also includes Jessica French’s “Strengthen for Service” and John Gardner’s “A Song for St. Cecilia’s Day.”

SUMMARY:Malhaar: A Requiem for Water
DESCRIPTION:NOVUS NY and Downtown Voices present the New York premiere of Reena Esmail’s Malhaar: A Requiem for Water\, paired with Garth Neustadter’s Memory of Water\, which will be performed by The Choir of Trinity Wall Street. A malhar is an Indian raga designed to beckon the rain; Esmail’s A Requiem for Water captures musically the beauty and awe of water while contemplating the fear and despair that surround its loss. As water exists beyond all beginnings and ends\, Memory of Water considers the consciousness of water and how it carries in its memory both the splendor and devastation of our world.

SUMMARY:Mozart Requiem
DESCRIPTION:Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s final composition\, Requiem\, was finished after his death by his student Franz Xaver Süssmayr. According to his wife\, Constanze Mozart\, the ailing composer had come to believe he was writing the piece\, initially commissioned by a German count\, to be played at his own funeral — and indeed some sections were. Requiem was later performed at the funerals and commemorative services of Ludwig van Beethoven\, Joseph Haydn\, and Frédéric Chopin. \nCenturies later in 1960\, “scraps of paper” containing Mozart’s unrealized ideas were discovered\, prompting new versions of the Requiem. \nJoin us for Robert Levin’s scholarly completion of this celebrated and emotionally stirring choral masterpiece\, featuring Downtown Voices with The Choir of Trinity Wall Street.

At this performance\, TENET will explore texts focusing on the maternal experience of Christ’s birth through the eyes of his mother\, those in community with Mary\, and those who dedicated their lives to sisterhood. SUMMARY:Anthems
DESCRIPTION:Downtown Voices and the NOVUS NY string quartet present works by Undine Smith Moore\, Jessie Montgomery\, Jenni Brandon\, and David Lang in an array of selections that explore various composers’ takes on an “anthem” or a song that represents ideals. Montgomery’s stunning Source Code takes inspiration from spirituals\, and Gjeilo’s Dark and Luminous Night portrays the journey of the soul as it is guided out of darkness by the light of love. The centerpiece of the concert is David Lang’s national anthems\, a meditative reflection on themes of peace\, war\, patriotism\, pride of place\, and what it means to defend freedom that is ultimately fragile and delicate. National anthems culminates in a powerful contemplation of our common fate that despite lines drawn on a map\, we are all inextricably linked in our human experiences.
