SUMMARY:Divine Muse: St. Cecilia Mass
DESCRIPTION:The second installment of the Divine Muse series features Charles Gounod’s deeply moving but infrequently performed St. Cecilia Mass. Trinity’s adaptation replaces the rare string octobass (there’s only one performing instrument in the world!) with the lowest pipes of the magnificent new organ in the church’s nave. This uplifting celebration of St. Cecilia\, the patron saint of music\, also includes Jessica French’s “Strengthen for Service” and John Gardner’s “A Song for St. Cecilia’s Day.”

SUMMARY:Special Compline by Candlelight
DESCRIPTION:Compline by Candlelight is an ancient rite of prayers to end the day; Compline means “completion.” Set in the tranquility of St. Paul’s Chapel\, one of the oldest buildings in New York City\, Trinity’s 30-minute Compline service is unique in that all who enter hold a candle and simply listen to Downtown Voices beautifully improvise the Compline nighttime prayers in song. There’s nothing to do but be.

SUMMARY:The Image
DESCRIPTION:Experience an evening of powerful\, thought-provoking music with the world premiere of Stephen Main’s The Image and Jessie Montgomery’s Divided. Composed for solo cello and orchestra\, Divided captures the emotional turmoil of a world grappling with racial injustice\, poverty\, and climate change. With the cello as a passionate\, unrelenting voice against the orchestra’s gritty backdrop\, the piece explores the struggle to find beauty and agency amid chaos. Stephen Main’s The Image expands on this theme of individual dignity\, drawing on the concept of Imago Dei — the belief in the divine spark within each person and the sacred freedom of conscience it entails. With a vivid libretto and sweeping choral and orchestral writing\, The Image reflects on humanity’s struggle for liberty and justice across history\, warning of the fragility of these ideals in the face of rising authoritarianism. Together\, these works explore the tension between chaos and hope\, challenging us to confront issues of our time while celebrating the enduring strength of the human spirit.
