The program concludes with the breathtaking and astonishing music of Bach’s Missa in A major\, one of his four settings of the Lutheran Mass. \nThe concert is presented by singers with the Chorworks summer program. Directed by the Chapel’s conductor-in-residence Dr. Philip Cave\, Chorworks is a week-long workshop for talented\, early-career singers to deepen their facility with early music repertoire. \nChorworks’ founder\, Dr. Cave\, is a conductor\, educator\, singer\, and the director of the professional ensemble Magnificat. As a vocal soloist\, he has worked with celebrated conductors including Leonard Bernstein\, and at venues including the Beethovenhalle in Bonn and the Sydney Opera House. Stephen Main’s The Image expands on this theme of individual dignity\, drawing on the concept of Imago Dei — the belief in the divine spark within each person and the sacred freedom of conscience it entails. With a vivid libretto and sweeping choral and orchestral writing\, The Image reflects on humanity’s struggle for liberty and justice across history\, warning of the fragility of these ideals in the face of rising authoritarianism. Together\, these works explore the tension between chaos and hope\, challenging us to confront issues of our time while celebrating the enduring strength of the human spirit.

SUMMARY:Mozart Requiem
DESCRIPTION:Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s final composition\, Requiem\, was finished after his death by his student Franz Xaver Süssmayr. According to his wife\, Constanze Mozart\, the ailing composer had come to believe he was writing the piece\, initially commissioned by a German count\, to be played at his own funeral — and indeed some sections were. Requiem was later performed at the funerals and commemorative services of Ludwig van Beethoven\, Joseph Haydn\, and Frédéric Chopin. \nCenturies later in 1960\, “scraps of paper” containing Mozart’s unrealized ideas were discovered\, prompting new versions of the Requiem. \nJoin us for Robert Levin’s scholarly completion of this celebrated and emotionally stirring choral masterpiece\, featuring Downtown Voices with The Choir of Trinity Wall Street.
