The program concludes with the breathtaking and astonishing music of Bach’s Missa in A major\, one of his four settings of the Lutheran Mass. \nThe concert is presented by singers with the Chorworks summer program. Directed by the Chapel’s conductor-in-residence Dr. Philip Cave\, Chorworks is a week-long workshop for talented\, early-career singers to deepen their facility with early music repertoire. \nChorworks’ founder\, Dr. Cave\, is a conductor\, educator\, singer\, and the director of the professional ensemble Magnificat. As a vocal soloist\, he has worked with celebrated conductors including Leonard Bernstein\, and at venues including the Beethovenhalle in Bonn and the Sydney Opera House. He has performed across Europe\, at the BBC Promenade Concerts in London\, and has shared the concert platform with many distinguished musicians\, including Sir Peter Pears\, Sting\, and Sir Paul McCartney. \nDr. Cave is joined in leading this year’s Chorworks workshop by guest artist instructors\, including soprano Molly Quinn\, baritone Harrison Hintzsche\, and instrumentalist Daniel Swenberg.

With the cello as a passionate\, unrelenting voice against the orchestra’s gritty backdrop\, the piece explores the struggle to find beauty and agency amid chaos. Stephen Main’s The Image expands on this theme of individual dignity\, drawing on the concept of Imago Dei — the belief in the divine spark within each person and the sacred freedom of conscience it entails. With a vivid libretto and sweeping choral and orchestral writing\, The Image reflects on humanity’s struggle for liberty and justice across history\, warning of the fragility of these ideals in the face of rising authoritarianism. Together\, these works explore the tension between chaos and hope\, challenging us to confront issues of our time while celebrating the enduring strength of the human spirit.

DESCRIPTION:In celebration of its 100th anniversary\, The Dessoff Choirs joins forces with Trinity Choir\, Downtown Voices\, and NOVUS to take the audience on a soul-stirring journey through Giuseppe Verdi’s Requiem. The epic work is paired with the world premiere of an exciting new choral work by Pulitzer Prize–winning composer Tania León\, commissioned for Dessoff’s centennial. Leading the powerful performance is Grammy-nominated conductor Malcolm J. Merriweather\, director of the New York Philharmonic Chorus and music director of The Dessoff Choirs.
